"I saw, or fancied I saw, the room and its furniture just as I had seen it last, except that it was very dark, and I saw something moving round the foot of the bed, which at first I could not accurately distinguish. But I soon saw that it was a sooty-black animal that resembled a monstrous cat. It appeared to me about four or five feet long, for it measured fully the length of the hearthrug as it passed over it; and it continued to-ing and fro-ing with the lithe sinister restlessness of a beast in a cage." - Le Fanu, “Carmilla”

yo, you probably got like a billion messages like this anyways, but they're important! you probably don't know, as people are always saying gender and sex interchangeably, but they are different! (glaad(.)org/reference/transgender) from what I'm seeing here about how gems are created and such I think you mean that the gems are sexless, not genderless. (unless they are? that would be SO COOL however I doubt that since they've already been referred to as women. tv needs more cool dames anyway!)

Thank you for the message, I really appreciate it!  I am always interested in learning more about this, because I know how important it is to a portion of our audience.  It’s hard to contextualize the nature of Gems sometimes because, in the show, they are beings from a world completely different from our own.  I suppose they are sexless… but that shouldn’t imply that romantic relationships can’t exist among Gems.  And while they do use what we humans recognize as gendered pronouns with each other…  Gems definitely don’t have female and male designations amongst themselves.  They’re all just Gems, first and foremost!

I honestly like leaving things a little ambiguous, though, in regards to labeling the Gems too hard, because it’s so awesome that all different kinds of people see themselves represented in the show.  I don’t want to exclude anyone from feeling a connection to the characters and stories we are telling.  I think that is what makes Steven Universe so special, and why I personally am so proud to work on it.

Thanks again for the comment!

Seven Deadly Asks: Wrath, for Delphie!

…This was stuff that makes them angry.  I don’t remember how many and can’t find the post so I’m just gonna rattle things off.

  • Anyone messing with Cobble.  Don’t touch her Nonnie.
  • People saying she’s bad/incompetent at something, even if it’s true.
  • And, by extension, losing at contests.
  • Chua, in general.  She thinks they’re damn annoying.
  • If the topic of her anxieties and obsessive tendencies came up I suspect she’d get pretty defensive and pissy, but as of writing, it’s never come up in rp.

Remember #BringBackOurGirls? This Is What Has Happened In The 5 Months Since

On the night of April 14, 2014, hundreds of schoolgirls at the Chibok boarding school in northeastern Nigeria awoke to the sound of gunfire. They saw men in camouflage approaching and thought soldiers were coming to save them from a militant attack, according to survivors’ accounts.

zomblequeen was awesome and answered my question.  Turns out it’s a quote from something Helen Cixous wrote, not a poem.  Copy-pasting it here so I’ll remember it.

For us, eating and being eaten belong to the terrible secret of love. We love only the person we can eat. The person we hate we ‘can’t swallow.’ That one makes us vomit. Even our friends are inedible. If we were asked to dig into our friend’s flesh we would be disgusted. The person we love we dream only of eating. That is, we slide down that razor’s edge of ambivalence. The story of torment itself is a very beautiful one. Because loving is wanting and being able to eat up and yet to stop at the boundary. And there, at the tiniest beat between springing and stopping, in rushes fear. The spring is already in mid-air. The heart stops. The heart takes off again. Everything in love is oriented towards this absorption. At the same time real love is a don’t-touch, yet still an almost-touching. Tact itself: a phantom touching. Eat me up, my love, or else I’m going to eat you up. Fear of eating, fear of the edible, fear on the part of the one of them who feels loved, desired, who wants to be loved, desired, who desires to be desired, who knows there is no greater proof of love than the other’s appetite, who is dying to be eaten up, who says or doesn’t say, but who signifies: I beg you, eat me up. Want me down to the marrow. And yet manage it so as to keep me alive. But I often turn about or compromise, because I know that you won’t eat me up, in the end, and I urge you: bite me. Sign my death with your teeth.

There’s a poem about “we only love the person we can eat” or something like that, and I can’t find it.  Agh.
